From putting greens and par-three holes to full-blown course replicas, the sport is increasingly taking up residence in gardens and backyards as golf enthusiasts of all levels look to shorten their travel time to the tee. California in particular is especially prone to drought, with state officials encouraging its citizens to cut their water usage. Yet “the number one” factor that can hike prices for larger greens, Nappi explains, is — ironically — drainage. Though they don’t require watering, greens sculpted in areas susceptible to heavy rain — such as Florida or Georgia — invite the threat of standing water, which can lead to mold and ruin the playing experience. “You can make it look pretty and beautiful and they love it, but it better play right,” Nappi said.

Phase Two, or Free Agency, involves those TOP 24 players who opted to become free agents and those who finished 25th to 44th whose contracts have expired. They can be re-signed by their previous team or negotiate with a team with an open roster spot. Cleeks GC have two open roster spots with both Bernd Wiesberger and Graeme McDowell finishing outside the Top 24, and Ripper GC also have two spots with Jediah Morgan relegated, although they have the option to re-sign Matt Jones. Fireballs GC, captained by Sergio Garcia, have one open spot as Carlos Ortiz declined a contract extension and opted for free agency, and Phil Mickelson's HyFlyers GC have an open spot after James Piot's relegation. Phase Two will finish when four roster spots remain, which are reserved for the winner of the International Series 2023 rankings, Andy Ogletree, and the top three at LIV Golf Promotions in Abu Dhabi in December.

LIV Golf is playing only for cash, not world ranking points, after the Official World Golf Ranking board determined it could not fairly measure the 48-man league with the other 24 tours around the world. LIV Golf made its debut in June 2022, and the lack of world ranking points has taken an enormous toll. Among those no longer in the top 100 are Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Talor Gooch, who has three LIV Golf victories this year. LIV Golf can reapply to be part of the OWGR system, though the board made it clear that turnover, objective access to LIV Golf and relegating players who don't perform remain key points in getting ranking points. There's also the matter of the PGA Tour, European tour and Saudi backers of LIV Golf (Public Investment Fund) working out a commercial partnership announced in June.

The trio had played key roles at the Ryder Cup over the years. Poulter played at seven Ryder Cups and helped Europe win five of them, with his huge performances earning him the nickname 'The Postman' as he always delivered at the event. "They've had unbelievable Ryder Cup careers and they've made their choices, and they've done what they've done and no one can take away the impact they've had for the European team over the years," the 34-year-old McIlroy said. "But I feel like this week, not having those big personalities in the team room let other guys have that chance to flourish and to shine: Viktor (Hovland), Jon (Rahm), myself. "There wasn't a ton of space taken up in that room by some of the other big personalities, and I think that just let the rest of the team just sort of flourish.

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — European captain Luke Donald was delivering his Ryder Cup victory speech in front of a giddy crowd at Marco Simone when his celebrating players standing beside him started a chant that quickly swept through the grandstands. Ineligible for this year’s Ryder Cup, it might be too early for them to be considered for 2025 whatever transpires regarding this “framework agreement” between the Saudi backers of LIV and PGA and European tours. He is already a multiple winner on the European tour. And how about the team having another set of brothers in Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick? “Seve, Ollie, the legends of the Ryder Cup that have come before us,” McIlroy said.

LIV absentees will miss us this week, says McIlroy

ROME, Sept 27 (Reuters) - After months of debating the absence of European Ryder Cup stalwarts Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy said that this was the week when the LIV absentees would "miss this more than we are going to miss them". "I think this week is a realisation that the decision that they made has led to not being a part of this week, and that's tough. McIlroy stood firm against LIV from the start and now finds himself as the Europe's "Grandfather of the House" as he prepares for his seventh Ryder Cup. "I just didn't put any emphasis on making a Ryder Cup team until you make one, and then you never want to be off one again. The most enjoyable moments in my career have been being a part of European Ryder Cup teams.

— Lee Westwood, whose 47 matches are tied for most with Phil Mickelson in Ryder Cup history (Westwood had one fewer appearance). His four Ryder Cup appearances were marked by testy exchanges, one of which prompted Ballesteros to refer to the U.S. team as “11 nice guys and Paul Azinger.”Did he not live for the Ryder Cup? He was defensive at times about his Ryder Cup performance, especially after starting out 5-8-2 while on two of three losing teams. Justin Thomas is one player who has a chance to be the American face of the Ryder Cup. He was roasted at the start of 2018 when he said he'd rather win the Ryder Cup than win a major.

Garcia, Poulter and Westwood have played a combined 28 Ryder Cups but are part of LIV Golf and resigned from the European Tour, which made them ineligible to play the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome. "First of all, I think that the team dynamic and the team environment in the European room will be unfazed," Azinger said on an NBC Sports Ryder Cup media conference call. Garcia is the Ryder Cup's record points scorer with 28.5, while Westwood has played a record 11 matches, being part of seven winning teams. Poulter has also played a key role in some of Europe's biggest successes. This year's Ryder Cup runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1.

1 Scottie Scheffler, were not even born the last time the Americans won a Ryder Cup on European soil. That was in 1993 at The Belfry, when Ryder Cup rookie Davis Love III made the cup-clinching putt. “I think one of the great accomplishments in our game now is to win an away Ryder Cup,” Rory McIlroy said. The PGA of America runs the Ryder Cup — not the tour — though the only access to Ryder Cup points for Americans was the majors. Missing from the European team for the first time since 1997 is Sergio Garcia, the leading scorer in Ryder Cup history.

May 5 (Reuters) - The DP World Tour has threatened Spain's Sergio Garcia with "appropriate action" after he failed to pay a 100,000 pound ($126,000) fine imposed by a sports arbitration panel within 30 days for playing in a LIV Golf event. The DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, last month won its legal battle to be able to suspend and fine LIV Golf players who competed in conflicting events without permission. "The DP World Tour today confirmed that 16 out of 17 players have paid their fines which were imposed for serious breaches of the Tour's Conflicting Tournament Regulation last June," the DP World Tour said in a statement on Thursday. "Sergio Garcia has not paid his £100,000 fine, nor has he given any indication that he intends to. Garcia, the 2017 Masters Champion, along with Poulter, Westwood and Richard Bland resigned their DP World Tour memberships on Wednesday, becoming ineligible for this year's Ryder Cup.

Mandatory Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY SportsMay 5 (Reuters) - The absence of Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter and Lee Westwood from this year's Ryder Cup is sad, but could herald a generational shift, said Team Europe captain Luke Donald. "I played with all three and they've been stalwarts of, and given a lot to, both the Ryder Cup and European Tour. This year's Ryder Cup could represent a "generational shift", said Donald, who replaced Henrik Stenson as Team Europe captain last year after the Swede said he was joining the lucrative Saudi-backed series. "There's great momentum with European golf, we've already had seven winners in the U.S. (this season) and a bunch of people who haven't played in the Ryder Cup have played great this year..."This year's Ryder Cup runs from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1 at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome.
The trio of Poulter, Garcia and Westwood have played in 28 Ryder Cups between them. The DP World Tour added it would provide further updates on other sanctioned members on Thursday. This year's Ryder Cup takes place at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome from Sept. 29 to Oct. 1. Garcia is the Ryder Cup's record points scorer with 28.5, while Westwood has played a record 11 matches, being part of seven winning teams. Poulter, another Ryder Cup stalwart, has played a key role in some of Europe's biggest successes in the biennial contest against the United States.

Poulter says he might not participate in Ryder Cup

Mandatory Credit: Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY SportsJan 17 (Reuters) - England's Ian Poulter said he might not compete in this year's Ryder Cup even if he qualifies. The 47-year-old, nicknamed "Mr Ryder Cup" for his exploits in previous editions for the European team, joined the LIV Golf series in June, jeopardising his involvement in the biennial contest. Poulter has won several titles on both the major tours and cited age as a factor in his decision to sign up for the LIV Series. The Ryder Cup, a biennial team competition between the United States and Europe, saw the U.S. defeat Europe 19-9 to win it in 2021. The 2023 Ryder Cup will be played from Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.
LIV captains play for laughs ahead of finale

[1/3] Oct 26, 2022; Miami, Florida, USA; Brooks Koepka and Ian Poulter share a laugh during a press conference before the LIV Golf series at Trump National Doral. LIV Golf has challenged the traditions of the sport, opting for a rock-and-roll party vibe that offers a departure from classic golf etiquette and promising, 'Good vibes, great eats and live music". "You probably don't know this because you've never been number one in the world," said four-time major winner Koepka to Mickelson. Trying to replicate the excitement generated by hugely popular team competitions such as the Ryder and Presidents Cups, LIV Golf incorporated a team component into all eight events. Mickelson, once an anchor of U.S. Ryder Cup squads, candidly described the LIV team event as a fun competition.

Phil Mickelson and three other LIV golfers have dropped out of an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour. Mickelson and 10 other LIV-affiliated players had filed a suit against the PGA Tour in August after the tour suspended them for their participation in the rival LIV Golf league. The PGA Tour declined to comment. The Justice Department is also probing into the PGA Tour for its possible antitrust violations tied to LIV Golf. When the lawsuit was initially filed, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan stood by the decision to suspend the LIV-affiliated players.
